In January–September, the retail sales before taxes of S Group’s grocery and non-food retail totalled EUR 8,240.2 million. Sales grew by 1.2 per cent year-on-year. Sales growth was particularly strong in online grocery shopping and the Prisma.fi online store.
“The steady performance in grocery and non-food retail continued, with online stores maintaining strong momentum. Online stores are continuously attracting new customers, while seamless delivery options, such as express deliveries in online grocery shopping, are growing in popularity. We are also investing in our store network: a new Prisma opened in Naantali in September, followed in early October by store openings in Tuusula and at Prisma Wiklund in Turku,” says Hannu Krook, CEO of SOK.
Purchases remained cautious in the third quarter of the year, despite an improvement in consumer confidence compared with the previous year. The summer weather was cooler than in the previous year, and this was also reflected in sales. Demand for seasonal summer products, such as ice cream, soft drinks, fans and outdoor toys, fell slightly short of the year before. On the other hand, shopping carts saw an increase in products related to baking, cooking, handicrafts and exercise compared with last year.
Continued growth for the Sokos.fi online store in specialty retail
The sales of S Group’s specialty retail in January–September totalled EUR 187 million, with sales remaining close to the previous year’s level. Sales performed strongly in the Emotion and Sokos chains, especially in beauty, home products and men’s clothing. Customers were also drawn to the expansion of the Åhléns range to all Sokos department stores in August and September.
Having been on a growth track all year, sales at the Sokos.fi online store continued to perform strongly in the third quarter. The online store’s expanded offering, smooth shopping experience and free in-store collection continue to appeal to customers. Orders placed on the Sokos.fi online store can now be collected from 700 S Group outlets. Sokos is also expanding its department store network, with a new Sokos opening in Seinäjoki in November.
Strong sales momentum continues in fuels retail and service stations
S Group’s fuels retail and service stations sales in January–September amounted to EUR 1,793.1 million. Sales increased by 21.6 per cent year-on-year. Sales of vehicle charging and fuels have shown particularly strong growth. This year, road traffic volumes have been in line with the previous year. In late summer and early autumn, however, they fell slightly short of the year before.
In addition to rising market prices, the growth in fuels sales was driven by the changed market environment for service stations, which supported a significant year-on-year increase in fuels sales volumes. Growth in vehicle charging was driven by the electrification of transport, as well as investments in expanding the ABC chain’s charging network and boosting its capacity. There are now more than 400 charging areas across Finland.
Car wash sales also performed strongly on the back of successful campaigns and ABC-mobiili. The ABC-mobiili app, which streamlines customer transactions, already has more than 920,000 users. The favourable sales performance across all ABC chain services was further strengthened by growth in B2B sales.
A lively summer travel season boosted the travel industry and hospitality business
Sales in S Group’s travel industry and hospitality business for January–September rose by 2.6% year-on-year to EUR 634.1 million. In the third quarter, this positive performance was driven by a successful summer season.
Business was particularly brisk across S Group’s hotels. In July, sales reached an all-time high, followed by a strong performance in August. Both domestic and international overnight stays at S Group’s hotels have outperformed the market throughout the year.
Sales at S Group’s restaurants also increased year-on-year in January–September, driven by network renewal and a strong summer season in the tourism trade. In addition to cafés and fast food concepts, demand increased across bars, lounges and dining restaurants.
