S-Etukortti kassalla

Finland is a country of stealth wealth: up to 424 million euros hide in co-op members bank accounts

Four million Finns already have the green S-Etukortti in their wallets or phones. Surprisingly many of them may be oblivious to how wealthy they are, as up to 424 million euros are hiding in co-op members’ S-Bank accounts. Money paid as cashback could be put to work by directing it directly to an investment fund using S-mobiili’s Saver service.

By using the green S-Etukortti at S Group’s locations, you can accrue cashback. And many do: four million Finns already have their own or a parallel card. In 2024, co-op members received an average of 202 euros of Bonus and other cash benefits to their bank accounts. In total, S Group rewarded its co-op members with nearly 535 million euros last year.

“The biggest cashback payments of the year typically accrue this time of the year when Christmas gifts and food for the festive season are purchased. It pays off to flash the card even when making small purchases, as the cashback percentage increases the more you buy. It’s easy to track the accumulation of cashback and the progress to the next cashback level from S-mobiili app as often as you like, even every day,” says Toni Kopra, acting VP Loyalty at SOK.

It pays off to get everyone living under the same roof their own cards, as the whole family’s purchases earn cashback together. If family members spend at least 900 € per month and show their green cards when paying, the cashback will be 5% of the total purchases. If the same card is also used for payment, an additional 0.5% payment method benefit will be earned. Co-op members who regularly shop with S Group typically receive more than 1,000 € in cashback and other cash benefits paid to their account every year.

Cashback can be accumulated at more than 2,000 S Group locations around Finland – including supermarkets, department stores, service stations, hotels and restaurants – as well as online stores. In addition, cashback can be earned from transactions with selected Bonus partners.

Cashback can grow in an investment fund

According to a Microsaving 2025 survey carried out by Kantar and commissioned by S-Bank, a fifth of Finns do not know how much cashback they have accumulated. The amount may surprise them: there is up to 424 million euros of money in co-op members’ S-Bank accounts at the moment.

“There is a surprising number of unknowingly wealthy people in Finland who do not know the balance of their S-Bank account. We encourage everyone to check their balance and put the money to good use,” says Director Sari Köykkä from S-Bank Wealth Management.

It pays off to put the cashback to work. In fact, more than 125,000 Finns already direct their cashback money straight to an S-Bank investment fund every month through S-mobiili’s Saver service or the online bank. You can also use the Saver service to microsave a small sum every time you use the debit feature of S-Etukortti Visa to make a payment. This is another way to increase savings without really noticing it.

“Directing cashback payments to a fund is an easy way to start saving in a fund with as small an investment as a few euros a month. We want to make saving as easy as possible and part of everyday life. What could be more convenient than saving every time you shop,” says Köykkä.

When a co-op member joins the co-operative, an account is opened for them in S-Bank. The cashback earned from purchases made with the co-op member’s own card and any parallel cards, as well as other benefits, are paid to this account once a month. In addition to the account, co-op members and their family members receive an S-Etukortti Visa and banking credentials, which allow access to the money, free of charge. Payments made with an S-Etukortti Visa at S Group locations also earn payment method cashback in addition to Bonus cashback.

The easiest way to check your cashback balance is through the S-mobiili app, which can be accessed with all banks’ credentials.
