We aim to reduce climate emissions to net zero across the entire value chain – Net Zero 2050
S Group has science-based emissions reduction targets covering the entire value chain. The Net Zero target means reducing greenhouse gas emissions from our own operations and value chain to net zero by 2050. Our short-term value chain emission reduction targets are:- Together with our partners, we will reduce emissions from purchased goods and services, upstream transportation, business travel, and employee commuting (Scope 3) by 45% by 2035.
- Emissions resulting from the use of the sold fossil fuels will be reduced by 63% by 2035.
- Emissions related to land use (FLAG) will be reduced by 45.45% by 2035.
- SOK Corporation (S Group) also commits to no deforestation across its primary deforestation-linked commodities with a target date of December 31, 2025.
Our climate actions to reduce value chain (Scope 3) emissions:
- The electrification of transport and the increased share of renewable fuels will reduce transport-related emissions.
- We will increase the share of plant-based food in line with the targets of our sustainability programme.
- We require grocery suppliers whose deliveries exceed EUR 10 million in value to set science-based climate targets.
Emissions reduction targets for our own operations:
- We will reduce emissions from our own operations (Scopes 1 and 2) by 90% from the 2023 level by 2035.
- All electricity we use will be produced from renewable energy sources by 2030 at the latest.
Other climate actions:
- Renovations at more than 650 locations have improved the energy efficiency of our stores. In addition to proper doors on refrigeration units and LED lighting, an increasing number of stores are heated using waste heat generated by refrigeration equipment.
- We generate solar power at several of our locations. The electricity generated at each location is used on a same site. All electricity used by S Group is emission-free.
- Gigawatti Oy, responsible for S Group’s wind power production, operated a total of 75 wind turbines across four wind farms in 2025. The wind farms are located in Simo (Leipiö II and Sarvisuo) as well as Raahe and Siikainen.
- Each year, we support climate projects with an amount equivalent to the emissions from our employees’ air travel. We have done this since 2018.
- We support the Carbon Action initiative, which promotes carbon farming in Finland, as well as research that enables emissions compensation.
